Mriehel Zone rebranded as Central Business District

The Mrieħel Zone is strategically located in the centre of Malta. With approximately 8,000 persons working out of area and thousands of customers frequently visiting the 260 operations therein, the Mrieħel zone has, over the years, developed into an important business destination. Continuing investment into the area is transforming this once warehouse type industrial area into an up-and-coming business district.

The Central Business District Foundation (formerly known as the Mrieħel Enterprise Zone Foundation), is a Public-Private Partnership between the Government and the private sector and was officially established by the Prime Minister in March 2016. The Foundation is tasked to formulate and implement a vision for Mrieħel, so that it is regenerated into a district, businesses would be proud to operate from, consequently encouraging entrepreneurship and professionalism. The Foundation will also establish immediate and long-term priorities that need to be addressed to ensure a suitable environment and will also act as a point of reference for enforcements actions required within the location.

The intention to set up a Foundation for the day-to-day management of Mrieħel was an important first step towards providing a co-ordinated approach to the necessary up-lift of the area. Following a cabinet approval, the Foundation together with the Planning Authority is working on a Holistic Regeneration Plan for Mrieħel including enhancements to aesthetics, health and safety, urban design, transport, maintenance, cleansing, waste management and all such matters which will improve the area.

As a next step in the revitalization and regeneration of the Mrieħel area, on the 24th November 2017, the industrial zone of Mrieħel was officially rebranded as Central Business District.
